Kuhlman Subject: 1 Meg Upgrade will not work Message-ID: <199306201859.AA20315@mailsrvr.az05.bull.com> I just upgraded my Gus to 1 Meg. I used "Sanyo 34256 245K x 4 DRAM" chips. I ran the gus memory tester supplied on the ver. 2.06 diskettes and it fails on banks 2,3 & 4 at the 64k spot. The original bank 1 chips work. The only difference is that the original chips are 70nsec and the new ones are 80nsec parts. I have checked all of the chips to make sure that they are inserted correctly and i was grounded during the install. If you could please offer any help, I help it badly. Also, it seems that after the dram tester software runs, it freezes my system so I have to do a hard boot. -- |----------------------------------------------------------| | Fred W. These AIL drivers will NOT work with Strike Commander. Origin uses a modified version which requires 386 protected mode and EMS. The only Origin games I have tried with these drivers is UW2. Simply because I was half way through the game (at least I think I am ) and I knew what it sounded like with SBOS. The problem that other person was having with UW2 and digital effects is known and should be fixed in Monday's release. Cheers. Time to go wash the car. Spacehulk works with the MIDI driver and the music is incredible but the digital sound does not work because spacehulk does not use miles driver to produce digital sound. However, the combination of soudblaster & GUS works. Great work on the AIL driver guys... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 93 23:39:30 EDT From: maclea1@SERVER.uwindsor.ca (MACLEAN BART) Subject: AIL and WGH3 Message-ID: <9306210339.AA00484@SERVER.uwindsor.ca> After going through the readme file on the new AIL drivers, I noticed Bethesda uses these drivers. I immediately went to check if my favorite game - Wayne Gretzky Hckey 3 had these drivers. It did so I began to install the Gravis drivers.I copied gf1digi.adv over sbdig.adv, gf1midi.adv over sbfm.adv, and gf166.com over sblaster.com. I then started the game like I had a Soundblaster. The opening music was much better than a SB or SBOS had ever played it. The problems started when I played the game: the game sounded normal for about 5 seconds (skate noises and puck sounds) and then the sounds just stopped. From that point on, only very few sounds would play. I knw these drivers are new but any ideas? My only other complaint is that the ultramid file takes over 50k to load but that problem is being addressed. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1993 12:06:07 -0400 (EDT) From: ccastge@prism.gatech.edu Subject: AIL drivers + ROE2 Message-ID: <9306201606.AA09500@prism> I tried the AIL drivers with Rules of Engagement 2 this past weekend, and the midi portion seemed to work flawlessly. However, when the game gets going, the digital sound will work for a few minutes, but then gets cut off for the rest of the game. (and any you play subsequently, unless you completely exit and restart). I hope that the fix coming Monday will eliminate this problem, because when I play using SBOS, not only do I not get the stunning MIDI sound in the intro (which, btw, is INCREDIBLE, vastly superior to SBOS), but the digital sound slows the game to a crawl every time a sound is played. One other problem that occurs is when the game is first started. When you start the game, it initializes the sound, xms memory, etc..., then brings up the Impressions logo. When this logo comes up, you can click the mouse or hit a key to bypass the intro (which takes about 3 minutes on my 386/20 to start up... no joke!), so I usually bypass it. All works well with SBOS 2.08, but when using the AIL drivers w/either mt32 sound or soundblaster sound, I can't bypass it! This is more than a bit frustrating, since the only solution is to turn animations off. And I don't think there is a way to get that option to be saved either... so effectively there is NO way to get by the intro. Just wondering if maybe this could be caused by the AIL drivers, and how? ccastge@prism.gatech.edu a.k.a., Guy Elden, Jr. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 93 13:14:31 EDT From: Stephen Ferguson Subject: EPAS Message-ID: <9306201716.AA15222@orca.es.com> I could not reach archive.epas.utoronto.ca. Perhaps you should change the address at the bottom of the digest to reflect this. sjf ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 93 14:58:49 EDT From: gregof@JSP.UMontreal.CA (Grego Filippo) Subject: Help with SBOS -F Message-ID: <9306201858.AA22528@spt1.jsp.umontreal.ca> Hi, I came across a strange error when I type SBOS -F to release it from memory....the message is: Unable to release SBOS Keyboard interrupt hooked Now, what does that mean ???? Message-ID: <215708210693*/G=Peter/S=Enzerink/O=FINANCE/PRMD=AUSGOVFINANCE/ADMD=TELEMEMO/C=AU/@MHS> People have been saying what a great advantage it is having more than four channels available for music et cetera, so where are the composers that take advantage of the GUS? I can't even find a MOD editor that is happy playing through the card. I've tried using SBOS with quite a few SB MOD editors but they all barf. The only editor I've seen that seems to work is ULTRA, but it seems be early days for this editor as the author doesn't even have a demo that utilises all the facilities of his program. Also it seems to be a propriety format which isn't PS16 so I don't know whether people will get behind it. Any thoughts? ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1993 22:54:48 -0600 From: Gary 'Fuzz' Haussmann Subject: My MIDI out works, but MIDI in doesn't Message-ID: <199306210454.AA12214@ucsu.Colorado.EDU> I'm having a maddening time trying to get my scratch-built MIDI box to work correctly. Gravis may have already started producing their boxes, but I'd rather just fix the one I have already partially built. I'm using Remek Lipinski's schematic, using an HP HCPL-2211 Optoisolator. So far, in testing, the MIDI out works fine - I can spew out data to my keyboard, and it appears to work correctly. However, my MIDI in connector refuses to give me any results at all. I've tried running GUSORGAN.EXE, but nothing comes out when I pound on my keyboard. I've gotten it to work correctly with my old Soundblaster MIDI connector (which I no longer own), so I know the program and the keyboard work correctly. When I look at the signals in my MIDI box, the signal goes all the way through the optoisolator and the NOT gates, but, mysteriously, when I go check pin 15 of the connector to my Ultrasound, it seems to always be tied high. Looking on the board itself, I see that pins 15 and 8 seem to be connected together. Since pin 8 is for the joystick, I can only conclude that pin 15 is NOT the receive pin; but, but...how can that be? I'm using the pin configuration as such. This is the 15 pin male connector as seen from the solder side: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 1=+5V, 5=ground, 12=tx the schematic says that pin 15 is rx. Am I wrong? Is something on my card broken? With out MIDI in, I can't really do anything... ================================================================= Gary "Fuzz" Haussmann haussman@ucsu.colorado.edu 3531 Florida Drive haussman@rintintin.colorado.edu Loveland, CO 80538 (303) 669-4752 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1993 08:25:57 -0400 (EDT) From: elminstr@hudlink.hoboken.nj.us (J.J. At the risk of sounding computer illiterate, if I have disk compression software running on my machine (ie Stacker) how can the computer read the previously compressed files if I don't load that TSR, as has been suggested in this digest. sjf by the way, I'm running on a 486, but my animation detail level is really low. Did I miss something in the installation of this game? ------------------------------ End of Ultrasound Daily Digest V4 #21 ************************************* To post to tomorrow's digest: To (un)subscribe or get help: To contact a human (last resort): FTP sites: archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound wuarchive.wustl.edu systems/msdos/ultrasound Hints: - Get the FAQ from the FTP sites or the request server. - Mail to for info about other GUS related mailing lists (UNIX, OS/2, GUS-MIDI, etc.)
